Petsy Pet Insurance review

The highest customer rating in our directory (4.9 / 5), three Canstar Outstanding Value awards, and a deliberately leaner product than the competition. The honest take.

The short version

Petsy is the highest-rated brand we've reviewed — 4.9 stars across 309 ProductReview ratings, plus Canstar's Outstanding Value Pet Insurance Award three years running (2023, 2024, 2025). Customer feedback is unusually consistent on "easy claims" and "fast turnaround".

But the product itself is more restrictive than several competitors. Behavioural conditions are excluded as a Specified Condition. Dental cover is optional add-on (similar to BWM's Booster Care). Routine care doesn't appear to be offered. Reimbursement options are 80% or 90% only — fewer flex points than Knose (3) or RSPCA (4).

If your reading of "best pet insurance" is "the product I'll deal with least" — Petsy might genuinely fit. If it's "the product that covers the most" — RSPCA's PetFlex or BWM's Nose-to-Tail with Booster Care add-ons cover more. Different brands optimise for different things; Petsy clearly optimises for claims-handling simplicity.

Score breakdown

v1.1 of the Insu Score weights four components. Petsy scores well on the dimensions covered; affordability is pending until our premium estimator launches.

Coverage depth23 / 45

Solid $25k limit and 80%/90% reimbursement options, but materially narrower scope than competitors: behavioural excluded entirely, dental as paid add-on, no routine care offering. Designed as a leaner product — which is reflected in coverage scoring.

Affordability4 / 30

Quote sampled 28 April 2026: $130.48/month ($1,565.76/year) for $10,000 annual benefit (Petsy doesn't offer $15k), 80% reimbursement, $150 excess. Materially more expensive than BWM ($949 for $20k cover) or PIA ($939 for $15k) — over 60% pricier per dollar of cover. Surprising given Canstar's Outstanding Value awards — the Insu Score is calibrated against actual quote pricing, not subjective value perceptions.

Trust signals13 / 15

Allied World Assurance (Australian branch) — APRA-authorised, AFCA-member, and the only Allied World-backed pet brand in our directory (no underwriter change). Distributed through Knose Financial Services. Loses 2 points only on shorter brand operating history (~5 years).

Customer experience9 / 10

4.9 stars across 309 ProductReview ratings — highest average in our directory. Plus three consecutive Canstar Outstanding Value Pet Insurance Awards (2023-2025). Lower review volume than BWM (3,193) but exceptional consistency.

Petsy's 49/100 surprised us. Three Canstar Outstanding Value awards in a row, the highest customer rating in the directory (4.9★), and 9 years of brand goodwill — but the actual quote came in materially more expensive than competitors AND for less coverage. Customer satisfaction reflects something other than headline value: simplicity, fast claims, easy customer experience. If those things matter to you, Petsy may still be the right call. If you're optimising for dollars-per-cover, the data says otherwise. How the score is calculated →

What we liked

  • 4.9 stars across 309 ProductReview ratings — highest in our directory
  • Three consecutive Canstar Outstanding Value Pet Insurance Awards (2023, 2024, 2025) — recognised on price-to-cover ratio
  • No underwriter change since launch — stable Allied World relationship
  • Customers consistently mention easy claims process and fast turnaround

What to think about

  • Behavioural conditions excluded entirely — not available as an add-on. If behavioural cover matters, look at BWM (Booster Care) or RSPCA
  • Dental cover is optional add-on only — not part of base cover
  • No routine care add-on offered (BWM offers Routine Care non-insurance benefit)
  • Reimbursement options are 80% or 90% only — less flex than Knose (3) or RSPCA (4)
  • PDS dated May 2022 — verify if any updates have been issued before purchasing

Sole AU brand on this underwriter

Petsy is the only Australian pet insurance brand currently underwritten by Allied World Assurance Company (Australian branch). Petsy's distributor (Petsy Pty Ltd) is an authorised representative of Knose Financial Services — but Knose's own product moved to Pacific International in 2023, while Petsy's product remained on Allied World.

Most other AU pet insurance brands cluster around two underwriters (PetSure and Pacific International). Being a sole-brand on a third underwriter is unusual — it means claims handling, pricing, and product structure are independent of the dominant underwriting families.
