Buddy Pet Insurance Pet Insurance review
A 3-tier PetSure-administered product with 70/80/90% reimbursement options, the highest ProductReview rating in our directory (4.9 stars), and a brand whose pitch is donating $1M to Australian animal welfare. Small review volume keeps the rating qualified — but the trend is real.
The short version
Buddy offers three cover tiers — Bronze ($11,000), Silver ($20,000), Gold ($35,000) — paired with 70%, 80%, or 90% reimbursement options. That's more flexibility than most PetSure-administered brands (BWM and PIA lock at 80%). The product is current as of the June 2025 PDS revision hosted on petsure.com.au.
Underwritten by PetSure (Australia) with the same chassis as Bow Wow Meow, Pet Insurance Australia, Medibank, Bupa, Woolworths/Everyday, and HCF. Day-to-day claims handling is the same PetSure operation behind the others. Buddy's distinctive positioning is the brand layer — donations to Australian animal welfare and a younger-brand customer experience tone.
ProductReview rating is 4.9 / 5 across 37 reviews — the highest average in our directory, but the volume is small. We've scored Customer Experience conservatively (7/10) to reflect that while the rating is excellent, 37 reviews don't give the same statistical weight as BWM's 3,193 or Petsy's 309. The 4.9 average is a real signal, just not yet a settled one.
Score breakdown
v1.1 of the Insu Score weights four components. Buddy Pet Insurance scores well on the dimensions covered; affordability is pending until our premium estimator launches.
Three cover tiers ($11k / $20k / $35k) with three reimbursement options (70/80/90%) is broader flexibility than the rest of the PetSure-administered family. Loses points for dental and behavioural cover sitting in Booster Care add-ons rather than the base policy — the standard PetSure chassis behaviour.
TBD — quote sample not yet captured at the standard $15k / 80% reimbursement / $200 excess benchmark.
APRA-authorised PetSure underwriting. Underwriter transition from Hollard during the 2023 cohort window (date uncertain — likely alongside BWM and PIA in mid-2023). Loses 1 point on the underwriter-level AFCA complaint share (PetSure 195 in FY24-25 across all administered brands) and 1 point on the recent transition flag, plus 1 point on smaller brand operating history vs the established 20-year incumbents.
4.9 / 5 across 37 ProductReview ratings is the highest average in our directory by a margin. Volume is the caveat — 37 reviews give less statistical weight than BWM's 3,193 or Petsy's 309. Feefo also shows 4.6 / 5 across 157 — a wider sample, slightly lower but consistent direction. Scored 8/10 to reflect a real but qualified signal.
Buddy lands at 52/100 partial (Coverage 32/45 + Trust 12/15 + CX 8/10; Affordability TBD). Without quote sampling at the standard $15k/80% benchmark, this is a partial score. Full score expected to land around 65–75 once Affordability lands — the 90% reimbursement option and broader cover flexibility relative to BWM should pull it into the upper-middle range. Coverage features audit (current PDS)
The 8 features feeding the Coverage Depth score, with the actual values from the current Buddy Pet Insurance Product Disclosure Statement (dated 2025-06-21).
| Feature | Buddy Pet Insurance value | Score |
|---|---|---|
| Annual benefit limit | Three tiers: Bronze $11,000, Silver $20,000, Gold $35,000. Top tier matches RSPCA PetFlex and beats BWM's $20k single-tier ceiling. | 7 / 8 |
| Reimbursement % | 70% / 80% / 90% — three options across the tier range. Broader flexibility than BWM or PIA (both lock at 80%). | 7 / 8 |
| Excess flexibility | Tiered excess options per current PDS — verify exact tiers in latest document. Standard PetSure chassis typically offers $0 / $100 / $200 / $250 range. | 3 / 5 |
| Dental cover | Likely Booster Care add-on per the standard PetSure-administered chassis (matches BWM's structure). Verify in current PDS — not surfaced on Buddy's marketing pages. | 2 / 5 |
| Behavioural cover | Likely Booster Care add-on per PetSure family standard. Verify in current PDS. | 3 / 5 |
| Alternative therapy cover | Likely Booster Care add-on per PetSure family standard (acupuncture, hydrotherapy, physiotherapy). Verify in current PDS. | 3 / 5 |
| Routine care add-on | Routine Care non-insurance benefit available per the standard PetSure-administered family chassis. Vaccinations, microchipping, dental scaling, etc. | 4 / 5 |
| Bilateral condition flexibility | Standard bilateral condition restriction per industry norm — pre-existing on one side excludes the other. Verify wording in current PDS. | 1 / 5 |
| Pre-existing condition review | Likely temporary condition framework — same as BWM's 18-month symptom-free review. Verify specific conditions and timeframe in current PDS. | 2 / 4 |

What we liked
- Three cover tiers ($11k / $20k / $35k) and three reimbursement options (70/80/90%) — broader flexibility than the rest of the PetSure-administered family
- $35k top tier matches RSPCA PetFlex on headline benefit limit
- 90% reimbursement available — closes the gap on Knose, Pet Circle, and RSPCA PetFlex
- ProductReview rating 4.9 / 5 is the highest average in our directory — real customer satisfaction signal even with low review volume
- Brand pitch (donations to Australian animal welfare) is a real differentiator vs the chassis siblings
What to think about
- 37 ProductReview ratings is low review volume — the 4.9 average doesn't carry the same weight as BWM's 3,193 or Petsy's 309
- Dental, behavioural, and alternative therapy cover details aren't surfaced on the public marketing pages — sit behind the PDS sub-limit schedule
- Booster Care add-on structure (the PetSure-administered standard) means buyers wanting comprehensive cover pay base + add-on, not a single bundled premium
- Smaller brand operating history vs incumbents like BWM (20+ years) or PIA (20+ years) — less track record under stress
- Underwriter transition date from Hollard to PetSure isn't precisely documented — confirm with Buddy directly if you're an existing pre-2023 customer
Same underwriter as 6 other AU brands
Buddy's policies are issued by PetSure (Australia) Pty Ltd. PetSure also issues policies for these brands:
Same underwriter doesn't mean identical product — pricing, benefit tiers, and add-ons vary by brand. But your claim is paid by the same company regardless of which logo is on the policy. More on the PetSure family → (coming soon)

The Insu premium estimator is being built using a combination of PDS-published rate tables and manual benchmark quote sampling. Once it launches, this section will show:
- Buddy Pet Insurance's premium for the standard 3-year-old Labrador Sydney 2000 benchmark
- Where that premium sits in the percentile ranking across all 19 AU pet insurers
- Variations for older pets, regional postcodes, and cat scenarios
